Hierophant
Traditional Image: A central figure with religious surroundings, often dresses as a traditional Pope. Like the Emperor, the Heirophant sits on a throne and carries a staff. There usually are two people sitting nearby, at his feet. Two pillars flank the throne.
Symbolism: The card is usually viewed as a whole, rather than having meaning in each individual element. The Hierophant is a holy man, and represents organized religion.
Overall Meaning: Though the Hierophant directly represents the Church and organized religion, the card really stands for all forms of institutions and society itself. This card is about order and stability, sometimes to the point of inflexibility in the face of change. As a specific person, the Hierophant may be a religious leader, teacher, politician or government official.
