Hanged Man
Traditional Image: A man suspended upside-down from a tree or pole, with one leg bent at the knee.
Symbolism: The entire scene represents how Norse God Odin hung from a tree for 9 days in order to learn the wisdom of the runes. The cross formed by his bent leg is a Christian reflection on the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.
Overall Meaning: Like the Hermit, the Hanged Man signifies a time of rest and reflection. But this card also has aspects of sacrifice involved. Enlightenment will come once you stop struggling and let things happen in their own time. You will be surprised what can happen when you stop thinking about yourself, and think about others instead.
