A wonderfully spiritual book that draws you outdoors to create a deeper connection to the wild world of Mother Nature. As with other Starhawk books, such as the Spiral Dance, her writing is downright soulful. Thankfully, this isn't another book that rehashes endless and superficial elemental correspondences. The first couple of chapters cover general spirituality and then there are chapters dedicated to each element.
The exercises can help you develop new skills that will build that relationship with the wilderness, though they get a little repetitive. Most of them are basically, "Sit in a quiet natural spot and observe what goes on around you", though in many variations.
There is a substantial amount of political opinion throughout the book, but it is Starhawk after all. Could you really expect anything else? Most of the politics are strictly environmental, but she does get more than a few mentions in about the World Trade Organization, multi-national corporations and international human rights issues.
And you certainly don't have to be living out in the boonies to follow the exercises. Starhawk offers up plenty of suggestions and ideas for those who don't have alot of Nature in their immediate surroundings.
